Co-Sleeping with Infants with James McKenna, PhD.

https://cosleeping.nd.edu/

*Note* I do not recommend any particular type of sleep arrangement for any family since I do not know each family's situation.  What I do recommend, is every parent has the RIGHT to know accurate information related to "co-sleeping" and the relationship to breastfeeding.

Enjoy the interview and feel free to tell me know thoughts!  Thank you!

 Artist Statement: Artificial Human Milk

The disconnect between mother and infant.  The mother’s milk is removed from the breasts with a machine, it is transported, it is cooled for preservation, it is stored and readily available for consumption at a later date, it is consumed by the infant every 3 hours in her presence or not.  The direct relationship between mother and infant is removed.  The process becomes mechanical.  The milk becomes a product.  The mother’s milk becomes artificial.  When the mother/infant relationship is diminished, what is the end result?  What happens when the infant is removed from the mother’s womb and placed in an artificial environment?  What happens when the substance made specifically for the infant is replaced with something artificial?  When does science take a step back and let nature resume its course?  Or not?  This work, Artificial Human Milk utilizes familiar plastic milk jugs and infant bottle nipples to represent food as commodity. The objects are placed at eye height to confront the viewer’s relationship with their own children; with their own mother.

My son, Hucklebrry spent the first 83 days of his life at Rainbow Babies and Children in Cleveland, OH.  Each week, we would have to purchase a $17 parking pass and after 12 weeks, it all added up! On top of gas, food, relitives sacrificing their own jobs to take care of my older son... the costs were unexpected for us and for many other families.  Please help us by donating funds for us to purchase parking passes for the current families in Huck's NICU.  Last year, we were able to hand out 68 weekly parking passes!!! We raised over $1200!!!  Let's do it again. Thank you!

Super excited to get back to work in the studio! Beginning Jan. 1, 2017 I will be updating my website. I realized, when becoming a mother, my studio practice expanded. Not ended. It became my whole life! I will be transforming my website into a space where individuals can view my work, but it will also become a platform for other moms to read and gain information on breastfeeding, having a premature baby and becoming a parent. I am really excited about this change and I hope my viewers are too! Keep checking back in for updates! Anddddd.... Huck is doing great! 16lbs!!! Both Huck and big brother love each other so much and I love watching them grow everyday :)

October 3, 2016

It seems like a lifetime ago since my last update.  Huckleberry was discharged from the hospital on August 6th... One day before his due date! He weighed about 8 lb. then, and today, weighs 12 1/2 lb.! He is doing amazing and we are so proud of him. He is laughing, rolling over and playing with his big brother. He is so happy to be home (and so are we).

June 12, 2016

Huckleberry currently weighs 3lb 12oz and is doing great. He is beginning to wean off his oxygen mask as well.

May 17, 2016

My sweet baby boy, Huckleberry Caelan Hendry was born at 28 weeks and 2 days on May 17, 2016 at 2lb 14oz, 14 1/2 in.

Mom and baby are doing well. He is stable, growing, and thriving. Mom will be taking a break from her studio practice until further noticed. Please stay tuned for updates with baby Huck :)
